Toward a Data Commons for Biomedicine

The amount of biomedical data continues to grow at ever faster rates, the research community is increasingly in need of flexible computational infrastructures able to support the entirety of the biomedical data lifecycle, including long-term data storage, data exploration and discovery services, and the compute capabilities to support data analysis and re-analysis, as new data are added and as scientific pipelines are refined. In this presentation Dr. Bonazzi will describe the community experience, and the team science approach needed for developing a Data Commons—that is, an interoperable infrastructure that co-locates data, storage, and compute with common analysis tools--and will present several cases studies.

Dr. Bonazzi received a B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Canberra, Australia, a M.Sc (prelim) in Pharmacology from the University of Melbourne, Australia and a Ph.D in Molecular Pharmacology and Computational Biology also from the University of Melbourne. She is a highly experienced biomedical data scientist who has always had a passion for understanding how data science methods and technologies can be applied to biomedical data to yield a better understanding of biology. Her work is focused on more easily being able to share, access, analyze, find and provide attribution to biomedical data and tools regardless of geographical location, size or complexity so as to enable new biomedical discoveries. She is a thought-leader concerning the development of a Data Commons - a cloud based platform that supports the ability to easily utilize FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reproducible) biomedical data. This work was started at the NIH and she is carrying that forward at Deloitte.
