What is the BDSIL and seminar series?
Each year the University of Virginia organizes a themed Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab (BDSIL) that fosters the development of new interdisciplinary collaborations and research project ideas.
Activities are aimed at sparking creative thinking to examine the scale and scope of the targeted biomedical research domain, tackling the data science challenge, and reviewing potential solutions.
The Seminar Series is a free, online, academic year-long series of talks centered around the current BDSIL theme. The series is open to the public and all are encouraged to join live or watch on demand.

Precision Cardiovascular Medicine
Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Collaborative Innovation

Virtual MicroLabs: May 21 & June 4, 2027
The BDSIL is a five-day, expenses paid, academic workshop that connects early career level biomedical and data science researchers from across the country. Facilitated virtual "microlabs" are held prior to the event. Around 30 competitively-selected, early-career biomedical or data science investigators and researchers are invited to participate. Throughout the program, professional facilitators assist the participants and accelerate the idea formulation process, while a team of scientific experts serve as mentors and impartial referees.

Foundations of Biomedical Data Science
Join Live! Fridays from 12-1pm ET
This year’s theme is Precision Cardiovascular Medicine - Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Collaborative Innovation. These virtual seminars will seek to ask “How might emerging methods in mathematics, data science, machine/deep learning, and AI inform precision cardiovascular medicine, finding new means to characterize heart health, guide personalized therapies, treatments, and interventions?”
The seminar series will provide essential topic introductions for viewers at all levels of the biomedical and computational sciences community. Visit the Seminar Series page to view the full lecture schedule.

Participant Success
The BDSIL strives to develop new and bold approaches to address challenging biomedical questions for topics that could benefit from a fresh or divergent quantitative perspective. The collaborations and project ideas created during the lab work towards the development of novel or significantly adapted models, methods, and approaches for addressing these biomedical questions. Watch our seminar to hear the experiences of past participants and how the BDSIL has positively impacted their collaborative research activities.
Project teams formed at the BDSIL develop proposals for submission to national funding agencies at the conclusion of the workshop. See the Past Labs page for previous topics, publications, and awards.
