What is Originality? Helping Researchers Avoid Potential Misuse of AI and Research Misconduct

By asking what originality is and how it has been challenged across different eras of technological advancement, Kristen Schwendinger will address the longstanding values that can counterbalance the potential urge to overuse or misuse AI.

In an era shaped by AI, our grounding in research integrity, ethics, and understanding of research misconduct is even more important.  This lecture explores the definition of originality, scholarly work that discusses it, and use of AI. Schwendinger will use the framework of originality, transparency, and creativity as values through which researchers can avoid research misconduct allegations.

As the Research Integrity Officer (RIO), Kristen is responsible for implementing the institution’s policies and procedures for addressing allegations of research misconduct. She fosters research ethics training across the UVA research community.  Her current research focuses on the ways in which the research community recovers from research misconduct cases.
